I never really watched Digimon that much when I was little either. Shame. I was watching it on youtube the other day though. It's pretty good, and it's actually nothing like Pokemon. I was a digimon freak at one point in time however. I still have my Terriermon plush that I got from Dairy Queen. It has been my favorite Digimon ever since.
Well, I actually have a lot of friends who are like "oh, I LOVE pokemon!" but have never played the video games, the card games, know anything about the universe, etc. It's quite disappointing, actually, because I always think I'm gonna have an awesome pokemon conversation, but then they have no idea what I'm talking about
I honestly have NO idea what's going on in the 5th gen... that one finally lost me. Couldn't really get attached to many of the new additions, and such strange aesthetic changes. 2nd gen will forever be my favorite.

Sorry to intrude, but I just noticed your comment and I think that it is great that you are considering watching digimon. But please, watch subbed JAPANESE(original) version, do NOT watch the American dub, they ruined too many things there. Sure, there are people who still like the dub, but the Japanese version is million times more expressive.
The American dub is probably similar to watching shows like "Ben 10". The Japanese version is expressive, it narrates adventure, friendships, emotions and hardships. Trust me on this one, and enjoy! ^^
